The Birth of EIL Côte d’Opale

The EIPC became part of the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale – ULCO – with the creation of the EIL Côte d’Opale – École d’Ingénieurs du Littoral Côte d’Opale on September 1, 2010.

EIL Côte d’Opale is a 5-year post-baccalaureate engineering school offering general engineering training in science and technology on 2 campuses :

  • A campus in Calais with an Integrated Preparatory Cycle and an Engineering Cycle, specializing in Computer Science,
  • A campus in Longuenesse with an Engineering Cycle, specializing in Industrial Engineering.

Création of EIPC – Two establishments born of one man’s will

With 60 years’ experience at the head of a company that today employs 13,000 people, Mr. Jacques Durand, Managing Director of Verrerie Cristallerie d’Arques – J.G. Durand et Cie, “perceived the ever-increasing difficulty of applying cutting-edge techniques to production, which are evolving ever more rapidly, and of finding proven, competent salespeople to sell products on all the world’s markets”.

With this in mind, and to compensate for the lack of higher education structures in the Audomarois region, he decided to create two schools, the École Supérieure de Commerce International du Pas-de-Calais (ESCIP) and the École d’Ingénieurs du Pas-de-Calais (EIPC), totally independent of the company “which would train young graduates for the development of our region”.

On September 23, 1991, barely eight months after this decision, a partnership had been set up with renowned schools to build and design the programs; the engineering diploma issued by the EIPC was recognized by the Commission des Titres d’Ingénieurs; the EIPC welcomed its first students to its premises. (Extracts from Jacques Durand’s speech at the inauguration of the two schools on September 23, 1991).
