Charlotte‘s experience

Sherbrooke

University training centre for the environment and sustainable development

The main campus in Sherbrooke hosts many faculties, and it’s easy to get around! There is an underground network that allows you to move without having to be outside!

The classrooms are very well equipped (video conferencing, electrical outlets, etc.).

We have access to a connected area. For each course, there is an educational activity plan that gathers all the information about the course (objectives, dates and content of sessions, project submission dates, project instructions, etc.).

On Moodle, many student resources are available, with well-detailed courses, including dates, materials, and reading documents. The teaching style is different from that in France. A 3-hour class addresses a theme that you need to work on before and after class independently.

Participate in the Welcome Night at USherbrooke International: it helps you discover the culture, meet others from the same nationality, and take your first steps into the university.

Be organized in your studies so that you can take advantage of many activities and visits.

Upon your arrival, go to Sherbrooke International for your health insurance papers.
Prepare for your mobility: AVE (Electronic Travel Authorization), passport, social security, international insurance, options for banking and phone services!
Remember to bring adapters for the outlets.

Food to try according to your tastes: bacon, yogurt and granola, poutine, baked beans, maple syrup, peanut butter.

The ice rink we tried in Sherbrooke is free, and skate rentals are also free, available at certain times.

Mount Bellevue offers ski trails; for example, a 4-hour session with equipment rental and lift pass costs 50 Canadian dollars, which is about 35€.

For my experience, I reserved my room in May 2022 for a mobility period starting in January 2023. At that time, many rooms on campus were no longer available, but there are many offers for “homestays,” as many houses nearby rent out a shared floor.

The university provides links for both campus housing and available rental partners in Sherbrooke.

Buses are frequent, and the campus is well-served. Transportation is free for students as long as you have a student ID.

The campus is really focused on student life!
The libraries are easily accessible, with a wealth of resources.

You can borrow books and reserve study rooms. There are many free spaces with tables and chairs for studying alone or in groups. These spaces transform into relaxation areas during lunchtime.

There are also cafeterias in the buildings.
Events called “5@8” are organized within the university by students, similar to Thursday nights in France.
